I want to tell you how Google business profile bring local customers by sharing a conversation I had with a salon owner from Kharghar about eight months ago.

She had been running her salon for four years. Excellent work, a loyal set of regulars, reasonable prices. But she was struggling to bring in new clients. She’d tried Instagram, handed out discount cards in the building downstairs, even tried a local newspaper ad once.

Nothing was working consistently.

When I asked her to search “salon in Kharghar” on her phone, she did — and then went very quiet.

Three salons showed up immediately on Google Maps. Photos, reviews, opening hours, a button to call directly. Her salon was not among them. Scroll further down the page, past the map, past four more listings — and there she was. A half-filled profile with one photo from 2021, no reviews, and an address that was actually slightly wrong.

The three salons at the top? One had opened just fourteen months ago. But it had 187 Google reviews, updated photos every week, and a complete profile with service details, pricing, and a booking link.

We spent one afternoon properly setting up her Google Business Profile. Within six weeks she had 34 new reviews, was appearing in the top three local results for multiple relevant searches, and had received 23 direct enquiries through the profile alone.

If your business already has an unclaimed profile — which is common, as Google sometimes auto-generates basic listings — claim it and then proceed to the optimisation steps below.

H3: Step 2 — Choose the Right Business Category

This is one of the most important optimisation decisions you will make and one of the most commonly mishandled.

Your primary category tells Google what your business fundamentally is — and Google uses this to match you to relevant searches. Choose the most specific, accurate category available. If you are a digital marketing freelancer, choose “Digital Marketing Agency” or “Marketing Consultant” rather than the generic “Marketing Agency.”

You can also add secondary categories for additional services you offer. A business coaching practice might have “Business Management Consultant” as primary and “Marketing Consultant” as a secondary category.

H4: Why Getting Your Category Wrong Hurts Your Rankings

If your category is too broad or inaccurate, Google will show your business for irrelevant searches and miss the specific searches where your potential customers are actually looking for you. Take time to research what categories your top-ranking local competitors are using — this alone can reveal optimisation opportunities.

Services — list every service you offer with individual descriptions. This dramatically expands the range of searches your profile appears for.

Products — if applicable, add your products with photos, descriptions, and prices.

Attributes — these are the specific features Google lets you highlight — women-led business, outdoor seating, wheelchair accessible, serves vegetarian food, and so on. Many of these appear prominently in your profile and influence both search rankings and searcher decisions.

Business hours — ensure these are accurate and kept updated during holidays and special occasions. Nothing damages customer trust faster than arriving at a business that Google said was open and finding it closed.

H3: Step 4 — Add High-Quality Photos Consistently
